Last week, we finally hit one of our bold predictions after a dry spell. We came close on a few others, but also whiffed majorly on one. Before we dive into our picks for this upcoming weekend, let’s start by recapping last week’s bold predictions.
Michigan Leads or is Tied with Indiana Heading to the 4th Quarter – Michigan kept the game close, but the Wolverines were down by eight heading into the fourth quarter. They cut the Hoosiers’ lead to two, but ultimately lost 20-15.
Kansas Upsets Iowa State – Bang. Kansas dominated the game, leading by 18 heading into the fourth quarter. The Jayhawks pulled out the victory, 45-36.
Sheduer Sanders Throws for 500 Yards – I thought Colorado would make a ton of big plays through the air. Sanders threw for 291 yards, but that was well short of the 500 I predicted.
Riley Leonard Scores Five Touchdowns – Leonard scored three touchdowns and had a good day, but he fell short of the five I predicted. Notre Dame is rolling right now. Watch out.
LSU Beats Alabama by Two Scores – One of my worst predictions since I started this site in 2021. LSU did not come close to winning and was run out of the building by Alabama.
We’re down to just three regular-season weeks remaining. Some teams only have two games left because of remaining off weeks. Make sure to enjoy this upcoming weekend because we’ll be missing it when March and April come around. I think a few teams will make statements this weekend, and a few will get closer to bowl eligibility. Let’s get into this weekend’s bold predictions.
Kevin Jennings Registers 400 Total Yards of Offense – If SMU is going to make a run at the College Football Playoff, they need a strong stretch run to help secure their spot. SMU has big wins over Pitt and Louisville, but they’ve also played close games against Duke and Nevada. SMU could be playing for seeding if they manage to win the AAC. Boston College is going through a transition after Thomas Castellanos was replaced and opted to enter the transfer portal. This is a game where SMU needs to flex their muscles and show off their offense. Kevin Jennings and Brashard Smith are two of the key players who make the offense run. Look for Jennings to get the job done with his arm and legs on Saturday. He has a big game, going over 400 total yards, and SMU wins big.
DJ Lagway and Co beat LSU – LSU is coming off an absolute beatdown at the hands of Alabama. Now they need to get their act together because they travel to Gainesville to face Florida. While the Gators have not been a great team this year, they have vastly outperformed many spectators’ expectations. DJ Lagway is coming back from an injury he suffered against Georgia. The Gators still have a shot at making a bowl game, but they likely need to win this game to have a chance. Lagway has been one of the lone bright spots for Florida and has shown strong playmaking ability. Look for Florida to take advantage of a down LSU team and pull the upset this weekend.
South Carolina beats Missouri by at least 28 Points – Missouri is not a good team. No matter how much Eli Drinkwitz wants to believe they still have a shot at making the College Football Playoff, those hopes will die this weekend. Brady Cook is not expected to play against South Carolina. The Tigers needed two touchdowns in the final 90 seconds of their game against Oklahoma to win. They lost 34-0 to Alabama just a few weeks ago. South Carolina has looked dominant in their last three games, beating Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt by an average of 23 points. Texas A&M dominated Missouri, while Vanderbilt and Oklahoma took Missouri to the wire. LaNorris Sellers and Raheim Sanders have the offense firing on all cylinders right now. This game will be over by halftime, with South Carolina dominating.
Jeremiah Smith goes for over 200 yards – Jeremiah Smith has obviously been one of the best receivers this season, but we haven’t seen him have a truly insane game yet. He actually has only two games of 100 yards or more this year. Northwestern is not a good team. They needed overtime to beat Purdue two weeks ago, the same Purdue team Ohio State beat 45-0. Ohio State is hitting their stretch run with Indiana coming up, and I think they’ll look to get Smith the ball often to help him feel comfortable before Indiana and Michigan. I look for Smith to have a career day and surpass the 200-yard mark. The biggest issue is whether Ohio State scores too many points and pulls him from the game early.
Kyle McCord Throws Four Interceptions – Did you know Kyle McCord leads the nation in interceptions thrown? He’s tied with five others who have thrown 12 interceptions so far this season. Did you also know Cal’s defense leads the nation in interceptions? They have 17 already this season, including Nohl Williams, who has seven of his own. It’s a match made in heaven for the Cal defense: a turnover-prone quarterback facing a defense that gets after the ball. I think Cal has a big day on the defensive side, giving McCord a long day. We already saw him throw five interceptions against Pitt earlier this year, and Cal has a significantly better secondary.
