- Through the first 37 CFP Rankings, the committee and the Power Points Standings agreed on fewer than three top four teams six times. Four of the six instances occurred in 2017. Given that Georgia will likely be the only member of our top four club included in the top four of the upcoming CFP Rankings, that will make it seven straight weeks dating back to the first poll of 2020 where the committee and Power Points Standings have agreed on fewer than three teams.
- Between the FBS and FCS, four undefeated teams lost for the first time, including FCS #1 North Dakota State, and six winless teams won for the first time, including Arizona which snapped a 20 game losing streak.
- Georgia remains #1 by a large margin after another easy win. Notre Dame and Michigan trade places this week, but both still need help to finish in the top four even if they win out. UTSA is the surprise newest member of the top four club after the Roadrunners easily defeated UTEP. UTSA also needs help to remain in the top four even if they win out.
- Purdue has a knack for knocking off top five teams while unranked, but could this be the year that the Boilermakers finish ranked for the first time since 2003?
- James Madison is the newest #1 in the FCS after previous #1 North Dakota State lost to South Dakota State. Dartmouth dominated Princeton to jump to #2. #3 Sam Houston State beat winless Dixie State and became the latest FCS member to accept an invitation to join an FBS conference.
- The same people that celebrate the “best regular season in sports” and use strength of schedule to dismiss G5 teams have been seen discussing scenarios where a two-loss Alabama makes the playoffs despite a non-conference schedule that includes Mercer, Southern Miss, and New Mexico State. The Tide could finish with three bottom ten wins.
- Perhaps David Bell should win the Heisman based on his games against Iowa and Michigan State alone.
- Every single week countless College Football fans ask others who they would pick to win between two teams as if the answer is relevant to where those teams should rank. Why do so many value hypothetical results and think favorites never lose actual games?
- Is it too much to ask that the top two G5 champions not selected for the playoffs or a New Year’s Six bowl are paired in a bowl game? A possible matchup between an undefeated UTSA and the Sun Belt champion would be an attractive game.
- I put together a “book” of the FBS Power Points Standings for the past 43 seasons that includes schedules and results for every team. If interested, please go to collegefootballbook.blogspot.com and follow the directions provided to receive a free copy.
